Side Event 10: AI for development: bridging the barrier between non-standard speech and the use of Automatic Speech Recognition

AI is becoming increasingly embedded in daily life and the potential for bespoke solutions is substantial, especially when combined with open access resources. This Side Event will explore the power of AI innovation, and how digital technologies, combined with research, capacity building, local knowledge and local languages have the power to change lives. We’ll hear practical examples from Google on their broader commitment to advancing AI development in Africa, and how alongside the Global Disability Innovation Hub's AT2030 programme a new Centre for Digital Language Inclusion is accelerating AI-Powered Speech Recognition for Non-Standard Speech, while provide local language models as an open-source resource.
