I have been working in the Deaf and mainstream disability community for over 15 years. For all these years, I have been promoting inclusive education.

My organisation

The Federation of Disability Organizations in Malawi (FEDOMA) is not a service provider; rather, we advocate and lobby for inclusive service delivery, promotion,n and safeguarding for rights of persons with disabilities. The organization was established in 1999. FEDOMA strives for an inclusive, barrier-free society where every individual can maximize their fullest potential. FEDOMA is an umbrella of organization of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) in Malawi that works to unify, coordinate efforts, and strengthen the advocacy work of its affiliates for the well-being of persons with disabilities in Malawi.

About me

My name is Malonje Phiri. I was born hearing but became deaf later in life, at age four. I spent 14 years learning at a special school for the Deaf before proceeding to mainstream schools where I was the lone Deaf student. Despite challenges, I managed to go to university where I obtained an MSc in Inclusive and Special Education at the University of Edinburgh.  Currently am working as a Project Coordinator at the Federation of Disability Organizations in Malawi (FEDOMA), and I also work as a Program Officer at the Malawi National Association of the Deaf (MANAD). I have spent over 15 years working in the disability community. I use sign language as a primary means of communication.
