The Network of Women with Disabilities (NWD) was founded to advocate for the rights, inclusion, and empowerment of women and girls with disabilities in Nigeria. Officially established in June 2021, NWD represents a nationwide network of over 100,000 women and girls with disabilities, making it one of the most extensive advocacy organizations for PWDs in Nigeria. With members actively engaged across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, NWD’s influence extends beyond Nigerian borders, connecting with international disability advocacy communities. Currently, our network includes over 500 registered members on WhatsApp and more than 15,000 members outside of WhatsApp, with 99% of our membership consisting of women and girls with disabilities.
Guided by its slogan, “Conspire to Inspire,” NWD works across several thematic areas including political inclusion, economic empowerment, health advocacy, research and mentorship, peace and security, and grant-making for women founders with disabilities. These areas align with NWD’s commitment to providing opportunities and advancing the status of women and girls with disabilities, ensuring their meaningful participation in the nation’s social, political, and economic landscape. We have reached out to over 5,000 members of NWD through our projects and initiatives.
NWD is led by its founder, Lois Auta, a committed advocate for disability rights, alongside a team of 30 staff members dedicated to advancing the organization’s mission. NWD’s governance structure includes a Grand Patron, a Board of Trustees (BOT), an Advisory Board, and various national and regional councils, enabling accountability and fostering inclusive decision-making.
